Suavecito Birria & Tacos
Suavecito Birria & Tacos is a birria-focused taquería in San Mateo created by chefs Emma Villanon and Bulmaro Maldonado with restaurateurs Randy Magpantay and Jeremy Cheng.
Overview
The restaurant is a collaboration between two chefs, Emma Villanon and Bulmaro Maldonado, and two restaurateurs, Randy Magpantay and Jeremy Cheng. In October 2022 KRON4 ranked it second in a National Taco Day roundup of the Bay Area's most highly reviewed taco restaurants, behind only Tacos Sinaloa in Oakland, making it the highest-placed Peninsula entry on the list.
Menu
As the name says, birria is the focus. KRON4 described the dish as a slow-cooked braised meat stew with some resemblance to barbacoa; in its taco form it is usually served with cheese and a cup of the cooking broth for dipping. Beyond birria, the menu's standouts include pork carnitas and shrimp tacos. Suavecito, a diminutive of suave, means smooth or easygoing in Mexican Spanish.
