Taco Boy
Taco Boy is an Anaheim taquería opened in the late 1980s across from the original Northgate González supermarket, regarded as one of Orange County's first true taquerías.
History
Taco Boy sits between the restaurant El Pollo Fino and the bar La Taverna, facing the first Northgate González Market, the Mexican grocery chain that started in Anaheim. Gustavo Arellano, who remembered eating there soon after it opened in the late 1980s, wrote in OC Weekly in 2015 that it belonged to the first generation of real taquerías in Orange County, alongside Taquería De Anda and Taquería Tapatía. Unlike those peers, which expanded, Taco Boy stayed small and largely unchanged, down to its yellow paint and wall-length mirrors. Police officers were regular lunch customers.
Menu
Tacos of carne asada, carnitas and al pastor are served on small tortillas, at a price that in 2015 was just over a dollar each. Weekends add menudo and birria, and the menu also includes carne asada fries and nachos. The house red salsa is thick, spicy and adobo-like; Arellano compared it to the famous red sauce at King Taco in Los Angeles.
