Tacos Perla

Tacos Perla is a taco shop at 30th and Upas streets in North Park, San Diego, opened around 2015 with recipes developed by Tijuana chef Oso Campos.

Overview

Tacos Perla occupies Suite 105 at 3000 Upas Street, on the corner of 30th Street in North Park. NBC 7 San Diego profiled it in 2015 as a new shop aiming to push the traditional taco further, in a segment that also covered Las Cuatro Milpas and City Tacos.

Consulting chef

The menu was developed with consulting chef Oso Campos, from Tijuana. According to NBC 7, Campos spent seven years traveling along Mexico's coastline with a backpack, working for local families in exchange for a place to stay and learning recipes from the mothers and grandmothers who cooked for them. One unusual touch is the option of adding roasted chapulines, or grasshoppers, as a garnish, a nod to their use as a snack and taco topping in southern Mexico.
