Tacos in India

Contemporary adaptations

Paneer fillings and Mexican-inspired cafés

The place: Mumbai

Mumbai is on India’s western coast, facing the Arabian Sea. It provides one entry into a much wider restaurant market where Mexican formats meet local preferences.

Taco culture

India’s taco offerings include Mexican-inspired cafés and adaptations with paneer. Gracias Granny describes its Mumbai cafés as combining Mexican food with other influences. Separately, Poptos publishes paneer makhani and paneer sriracha tacos with beans, vegetables and cheese. These are restaurant adaptations, not a single traditional Indian taco.

The photograph illustrates paneer tikka masala tacos using a published home-recipe reference. It is not a photograph of either business’s product, and the chickpea topping belongs to that illustrative recipe rather than the Poptos menu.
