Tacos in Japan

Mexican taco scene

Taquerías and a separate Okinawan adaptation

The place: Tokyo

Tokyo is on the Pacific side of Japan’s main island, Honshu. Okinawa lies much farther southwest and has a distinct food history that should not be collapsed into Tokyo’s restaurant scene.

Taco culture

Japan has Mexican taquerías alongside adaptations of Tex-Mex flavors. Okinawan taco rice puts taco-seasoned meat and toppings over rice, so it is a related dish rather than a tortilla taco.

The country article separates those histories from contemporary restaurant tacos. A taco photograph here illustrates the tortilla-based food; it should not be read as an image of taco rice or as a dish unique to Tokyo.
