Tacos Beatriz, affectionately called Beatricita, is a Mexico City guisado taquería founded by Beatriz Muciño Reyes and often cited as the oldest taquería in the capital.

Overview

The business was started by Beatriz Muciño Reyes, who had come to Mexico City from the State of Mexico in 1887. Chilango recounts that she began by selling quesadillas, enchiladas and tacos at the doorway of her home on República de El Salvador street, before moving through several Centro Histórico addresses. Gastrolab gives 1907 as the date usually cited for the taquería, and Chilango says that year the business took premises on Uruguay street.

Beatriz ran the stand for about four decades and retired in 1945, after which her nephew Alejandrino Reyes carried it on. In 1971 the family moved to Londres 190 in the Zona Rosa (colonia Juárez) and turned the taquería into a fonda. Chilango reports that the fourth generation keeps the original recipes.

Context

The menu is built around cazuelas of guisados served in handmade tortillas, including rice, mole, potato with chorizo, rajas and chicharrón; the mole is billed as the favorite of Porfirio Díaz. Writer Carlos Monsiváis is credited with popularizing the nickname Beatricita, and Chilango lists María Conesa, Agustín Lara and Cantinflas among its historic customers.
